Types Of Lens Designs

Multifocal/Progressive

Lens prescription slowly changes from distance to near

A general-purpose option for those aged >40 years old.

Advantages

Currently best solution to replicate human vision (to change from distance to reading)
1 pair of glasses for all tasks
3 main focal points for distance, intermediate (e.g. computer) and near, so can see all distances clearly
Great for general purpose glasses
Helps control the prescription increase rate
Low risk of losing glasses as you can wear them all day
Cosmetically pleasing, as lens appears smooth, much like a single vision lens.

Things to be aware of:

Flat surfaces may appear curved initially
You must hold your head/eye gaze at the correct height to see clearly

Peripheral distortion causes blurry vision on the sides. You will need to position your head straight on to see clearly.
- This can be minimised with higher quality lens designs (contact us for more details)
Not ideal for prolonged periods of time at the computer as the intermediate area is relatively small.
It is not advisable to read or watch TV lying down, due to the different focal areas.

Extended focus

Lens prescription changes from intermediate (computer) to near

Ideal for those that spend prolonged periods at the computer, aged >40 years old.

Advantages

2 main focal points for intermediate (e.g. computer) and near, so can see computer and written notes clearly
Relieves eye strain and improves visual clarity
Great for office and computer work
Less peripheral distortion than multifocal/progressive lenses due to the slower prescription change.
Helps control the rate of prescription increase
Cosmetically pleasing, as lens appears smooth, much like a single vision lens.

Things to be aware of:

Flat surfaces may appear curved initially
You must hold your head/eye gaze at the correct height to see clearly
Must remove glasses / change to a suitable pair when looking in the distance
Slight peripheral distortion causes blurry vision on the sides. You will need to position your head straight on to see clearly
Does not allow for reading while lying down, due to different focal areas
Glasses must be adjusted to sit well on your face, otherwise the focal points may be out.

Single vision

Entire lens is the same prescription.

Aged <40 years old: lenses can be used for BOTH distance and near work.

Aged >40 years old: lens can be optimised for distance OR near work.

Advantages

Entire lens is dedicated to prescribed working distance
Maximises comfort for prolonged reading
No distortion on side of lenses
No need to adjust head position to find the best optics for a given distance.

Things to be aware of:

If you are >40yrs old, you will not be able to use them for both distance and near viewing
Must remove glasses when not in use. E.g. if glasses are for reading only, you will need to remove them when looking in the distance; and vice versa. If this is not done, you are at risk of increasing your prescription
Higher chance of losing glasses as they are removed regularly.

- Flat surfaces may appear warped initially
- You must hold your head/eye gaze at the correct height to see clearly
Slight peripheral distortion, but goes unnoticed for most people
Does not allow for reading while lying down, due to different focal areas
Glasses must be adjusted to sit well on your face, otherwise the focal points may be out.

Bi-focal

Lens prescription sharply changes from distance to near

More traditional lens design for clear vision at distance and near

Advantages

No peripheral distortion
2 main focal points for distance and near, so can see these areas clearly with minimal head adjustment
Helps control the rate of prescription increase
Low risk of losing glasses as you can wear them all day.

Things to be aware of:

May not be as cosmetically pleasing as there is a line that breaks up distance and near areas
Does not allow for intermediate (computer) distance viewing
Does not allow for reading while lying down, due to different focal areas
Glasses must be adjusted to sit well on your face, otherwise the bifocal line can interfere with vision.

Tri-focal

Lens prescription sharply changes from distance to intermediate to near

More traditional lens design for clear vision at distance, intermediate and near

Advantages

No peripheral distortion
3 main focal points for distance, intermediate and near, so can see these areas clearly with minimal head adjustment
Helps control the rate of prescription increase
Low risk of losing glasses as you can wear them all day.

Things to be aware of:

May not be as cosmetically pleasing as there is a line that breaks up each area
Does not allow for reading while lying down, due to different focal areas
Glasses must be adjusted to sit well on your face, otherwise the trifocal lines can interfere with vision.

Night driving: Objects can fade into the darkness due to poor contrast, disrupting your vision. Using premium Anti-Reflection Coating helps improve contrast and reduce glare which makes it easier to drive at night.

*Blue glare protective coating has a slight yellow tint. It is therefore not suitable for those who need to see true colour in detail e.g. designers, photographers.

High-index (thinner lenses)

High-index material is thinner and lighter than the standard

Ideal for those with higher prescriptions >2.50D

High index lens materials bend light more efficiently to make your lenses noticeably thinner, lighter and more attractive.

As a general rule, the higher the index, the thinner the lens, with the thinnest lens (1.74) being at least 50% thinner than conventional lenses (1.5).

Transition (colour-changing lenses)

Lens colour changes from clear to dark

Activates with exposure to UV light. Ideal for those on the go

Comes in 4 options:

Standard Transition – Fully clear to dark. Perfect for everyday use
Xtractive – 20% tint to extra dark. Tints even when driving
Polarised Xtractive – 20% tint to extra dark. Polarised when tinted
Drivewear – 60% tint to extra dark. Polarised. Maroon/brown lens colour allows for high contrast viewing with minimised glare.

Advantages

No need to change to prescription sunglasses when outdoors
Comes in 6 different colours to express your unique style.

Things to be aware of:

Takes time to fully activate and clear between going indoors and outdoors, and vice versa.

Absolutely! When we prescribe glasses, we take into account various factors:

Lens Optics & Frame Selection

We check the fitting of the frame around your nose and ears
We look for the most suitable frame to give you the optimum optical effect
All our lenses are specially selected by optometrists to give the best comfort and clarity. Our lens manufacturer has been creating optical lenses since 1849.
- The lenses are made using cutting-edge technology to provide sharp vision, comfort and effortless adaptation.
- Lenses are made from superior material, just like the lenses of a professional photographer’s camera.
- The lenses also come with superior lens coatings.

Other stores may use generic brand lenses to reduce the cost, whereas we choose experienced manufacturers to provide you with the best optical care. Our standard level lenses may well be the premium products other places offer. Even though the number in the prescription is the same, the design and optical quality of the lenses will still be different.

Extensive quality control measures

Our many stages of quality control stations mean that you can be rest assured to collect your glasses trouble-free. We actively prevent problems instead of letting our patients tell us about them. Therefore, we subject every glasses job to the following quality measures:

Detailed and optimised measurement of the pupil distances and optical height measurements for your specific needs.
Two-person check of the order before sending it out to the lab
When the glasses come back, it has to pass our two quality control stations before it reaches you.
- Accurate prescription and optical measurements
- Lenses are scratch-free
- Coating quality
- Frame quality
- Nosepads and temples pre-adjusted for optimal fit
- Lens screws lacquered tight
Because all of the above can make a huge difference in visual clarity and comfort, if there are any faults found during quality control, we will reject the job and request a remake.

It is not guaranteed other stores will take these steps to look after each glasses job.
